Acute Assessment Unit
About us
We have a well-established paediatric diabetes team providing support for children and young patients with diabetes. We provide support for all types of diabetes in children and young people, both in an inpatient and outpatient setting.
We provide regular structured education for families on an individual basis, group setting and support staff in schools and other education facilities. Our multidisciplinary team consists of consultant paediatricians, specialist nurses and dietitians.
We provide our patients with access to technology such as continuous glucose monitoring, smart pens and insulin pump therapy.
Our specialist diabetes team provides:
- Diabetes specialist nurses who are a regular point of contact for diabetic patients and their families, providing advice and support via telephone, email or face to face.
- MDT outpatient clinics offered every three months including transition clinics to introduce our young people to the adult diabetes service. We offer a comprehensive screening programme for all paediatric diabetic patients to reduce the risk of long-term complications.
- Consultants and specialist nurses who are trained in delivery up to date diabetes education and support for families, including the use of technology such as continuous glucose monitors and insulin pump therapy.
- Structured education and support for families, children and young people and also support staff in nurseries, schools and colleges. We also run monthly education clinics.
