Stenhouse Library provides a wide range of services to support all staff and students on placement at Kingston Hospital, in their delivery of patient care, studies, research and professional interests.

In addition to books and journals, the library offers IT and study facilities, training, literature searching, online resources, and interlibrary loans. Find out more in our Library Resources page:

All Trust staff and students on placement are entitled to register and join the library free of charge.

A quick online registration form can be filled in and the next time you are in the library you will be issued with a barcode to give you access to borrow books on the self-issue machine outside of staffed hours. 

Borrowing rights:

  • Trust staff – 8 books for 4 weeks
  • Students on placement – 8 books for 4 weeks
  • Volunteers, locums and bank staff – 8 books for 4 weeks (managers signature required upon registration)
  • Private members (staff and students not part of the Trust) will incur a charge for membership of £150 per annum or £12.50 per month. Borrowing rights and services available will be given on enquiry.

Renewals:

All books can be renewed three times providing another user has not requested the item.

Library Induction – get to know your library!

Meet the friendly library team and find out how to register with us, search and locate the books you want and then borrow them. You will also discover all the resources the library has on offer and find out the best ways to access them, either online or in print.

How to write effective papers using academic literature

This session is aimed at managers who are writing reports and papers to present to the Board.

In this session you will learn why using research, when writing a report is important.  You will discover how to formulate an appropriate research question, identify and understand the different types of evidence and use an appropriate database to find quality information. There will also be a practical element to the session where the group will appraise a paper together. Finally, you will be shown how to include citations and add a bibliography to your report using Harvard Referencing.

Reflective Reading and Discussion Club

Read your choice of an article on a specific topic and take part in discussion boards and an online Teams meetings with your colleagues, hosted and led by the library team.

Staff Inductions

The library team hold introductions to the library for various departments as part of the staff inductions process.  Please contact the library to arrange.  We are happy to hold these online or face to face and can be for any duration ranging from 10- 30 minutes. 

1 to 1 Literature Search Training

In addition to group training sessions on Finding the Evidence the Librarians are able to provide one-to-one training on literature searching. This provides the opportunity to look at specific training requirements and questions and can be adapted to what the information need is. 

Reading Research – Quantitative and Qualitative

The Library runs training sessions looking at how to read research using critical appraisal techniques. These two advanced sections of reading research follow the introduction to critically appraising research of which the details can be found above

Keeping up to date

Keeping up to date with recent health and scientific publications is vital for staff and researchers. This training course covers a range of services that will help you keep up to date.

Managing References

EndNote Basic is a free web version of EndNote and is an online referencing software that can be used for collection and organising references. To book training at a date that is suitable for you, please contact: khft.library@nhs.net

Online Training

Moodle provides a virtual learning environment allowing access to training and resources anytime, anywhere. The Trust has a Moodle site. The library has an array of online courses available including, Library Induction, Finding the Evidence, NHS Knowledge and Library Hub and Managing References all available to view, at a time that suits you.  If you need any help accessing your Moodle account, please get in touch with the library team.  

The Clinical Librarian, is the named librarian for specific departments to provide them with someone familiar to approach in the library. The service brings the library into the clinical areas and is present at interdisciplinary meetings to promote the use of evidence-based sources in the practice of medicine.

The Librarian is able to provide help relating to any of the library services including:

  • conducting literature searching
  • getting copies of articles or books if our library does not have them
  • providing 1:1 training on searching for literature
  • provide current awareness bulletins
  • providing literature searches the updating of guidelines
