Biography

Mr Sherafat has been a consultant since 2005 and joined Kingston Hospital in 2009.

He has been the Clinical Lead of the Royal Eye Unit since 2011. He qualified from St. George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, in 1992 and subsequently undertook higher specialist training in ophthalmology in London, which included training in centres such as Guys and St. Thomas’ Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Mr Sherafat has also completed sub-specialist fellowship training in the field of Oculoplastics at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) of the UK in 1997 and is a member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and British (ESCRS) and Oculoplastics Surgery Society (BOPSS).
Areas of interest:

Complex cataract surgery – Leads and set up the best interest ophthalmology service for vulnerable patients with learning difficulty or those lacking capacity.
All aspects of eyelid and lacrimal surgery:

• Benign and malignant eyelid lesions (growths)
• Eyelid malpositions: ptosis, ectropion, entropion corrective surgery
• Blepharoplasty
• Watery eyes (lacrimal surgery)
• Dry eyes
• Thyroid eye disease
• Botulimum toxin for facial dystonias

His close collaboration and work with local organisations supporting the visually impaired was recognised by Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and members of the House of Lords, where he was invited to the House of Lords in 2016 for recognition of services to the visually impaired.
