Biography

Matthew Oldfield trained in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Leicester in what is now the largest clinical diabetes research centre in the UK. His research interests were in advanced glycation and the effect of these on the complications of diabetes, particularly in the kidney. This continues as he runs a joint kidney, diabetes clinic at Kingston and Queen Mary’s Hospitals as well as championing insulin pump use in the area.

Subsequent to his doctorate degree, which was undertaken in Melbourne Australia he was appointed as a Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Kingston General Hospital in 2004. Recently He has been involved in the development of improved community services for people with diabetes throughout Surrey.

In addition to his interests in diabetes and endocrinology he has retained an interest and love of general medicine and for five years was the acute medicine lead at Kingston. During this time he developed the ambulatory care pathways that exist there looking at patient focused investigation and management of clots, cellulitis, chest pain and outpatient procedures. He continues to take an active interest in general medical problems and is the clinical lead for general medical training for Kingston Hospital.
