Professional background

Dr Elli Demertzi graduated from the Medical School of Athens, Greece. She undertook her basic Clinical Microbiology and Virology Training in Athens and gained a Doctorate in Medicine with Hons (MD) from National University in Athens too. She pursued her research interests at PHLS, PHE in molecular typing and resistance mechanisms investigation of healthcare associated pathogens and at Imperial College in Chelsea & Westminster Hospital where she investigated the neonatal microbiome.

Dr Demertzi was appointed as Consultant Microbiologist at Kingston Hospital in February 2015. Her areas of expertise include molecular diagnostics, paediatric, neonatal, maternal, orthopaedic and healthcare associated blood steam infections. She has special interest in augmented care, ambulatory care (OPAT), integrating rapid diagnostics (POCT) into decision support systems and led the introduction of a new molecular POC Testing for influenza .

She is the Infection Control Doctor for Kingston Hospital. She is the chair of the Decontamination Group and the responsible Microbiologist for the Trust Water Safety Group.
