Disposal of sharps, and sharps bin

It is important to dispose of all used needles and lancets in a safe way to avoid injury and cross infection.

Always dispose of used needles and lancets in a special disposal bin called a sharps bin.

Your GP or diabetes team will give you the disposal bin (sharps bin) free on prescription if you are new to using sharps items.

The following can go into the sharps bin:

  • used syringes and needles
  • lancets for blood glucose testing
  • empty insulin cartridges.
