Neurodiversity information for parents and young people
Important information
You must have a responsible adult with you for 24 hours following your procedure. This includes staying with you overnight.
If you have been given sedation during your procedure, for the first 24 hours you must not:
- operate heavy machinery
- drive any vehicle
- consume alcohol.
After your procedure
For the first 48 hours after your procedure
To aid your recovery, follow this advice for the 48 hours after your procedure.
Do not:
- undertake energetic activity or vigorous exercise such as gardening, cycling, lifting heavy objects.
Do not:
- take any medicine containing aspirin. Aspirin may increase your risk of bleeding from the procedure site.
How to aid your recovery at home
To aid your recovery, do the following.
- Keep the dressing clean and dry. There is no need to change the dressing daily. Only change it if it gets wet or dirty. After 48 hours, you can remove the dressing by gently pulling it off.
- If you experience pain or discomfort, you can take simple pain relief such as paracetamol or your usual painkillers (if you take any).
Follow-up appointments
Your consultant or their team will arrange a follow-up appointment for you.
Biopsy results can take up to a week or more and they will be sent to the doctor who referred you. (They will not be sent to the Radiology Department).
Get in touch with your consultant or their team if you still have not heard from them after 10 days.
You can find their number on your appointment letter (if you have one). You can also contact them by calling the Kingston Hospital switchboard on 020 8546 7711 and asking for the department which is looking after you.
When to seek urgent medical help
Go to your nearest Emergency Department (A&E) if you notice any of the following:
- excessive bleeding from the procedure site, even after applying continuous pressure on it for 10 minutes
- worsening pain that is not relieved by your usual painkillers
- signs of allergic reaction, such as rashes all over the body, difficulty breathing and/or itching.
