Endocrine prescriptions

Some endocrine prescriptions can only be issued by an endocrine healthcare professional at Kingston Hospital.  In these cases, your GP cannot issue a repeat prescription.

Renewal of your hospital prescription

If you are an endocrine patient, the Kingston Hospital endocrine team will see you as necessary based on your clinical needs.  Your appointments may not always coincide with the time for the renewal of your prescription.

The maximum frequency we can issue you a new hospital prescription is every 6 months. In some cases your clinician may decide to prescribe for a shorter duration.

The clinician will send your prescription electronically to the Boots pharmacy in Kingston Hospital. To collect your prescription, first go to the counter to get a numbered ticket. The pharmacy screen in the Outpatient waiting area will tell you when your medicines are ready and you can then collect them from the pharmacy counter.

When to collect your medicines from Boots

You can only be given endocrine medicines for 2 months at a time.  This means that, during the 6 month period covered by your prescription, you will need to collect a new batch of medicines on 3 separate occasions.

In cases where a prescription has been issued for 6 months and you are collecting your next batch, remember it takes at least 3 working days for the pharmacy to get them ready.

You need to collect your batch of medicines within 3 weeks from the the order date.  If you do not collect them within this time, they will be returned to the supplier.

Ordering your next batch

At least 3 working days before you need them, order your next batch of medicines from Kingston Hospital Boots pharmacy.

Clinic appointments

How often will I have a clinic appointment?

When you have your first clinic appointment with the endocrine team, they will discuss with you the date of your next clinic appointment.  It will depend on your clinical needs. They will confirm the date of your next appointment in writing or via the patient portal.

What happens after my clinic appointment?

  • After your endocrine clinic appointment, we will send a letter electronically to your GP within 4 weeks. You will also receive a copy.
  • Sometimes clinic letters may be delayed while we are waiting for test results.
  • Your clinic letter explains what was discussed and agreed at your clinic appointment.  It gives you information on the medicines that have been prescribed for you.
  • Some prescriptions are ‘hospital only’ which means you must collect them from the Kingston Hospital Boots pharmacy.
  • Apart from specific hospital only medicines (which will be mentioned to you at the clinic), other prescriptions can be issued by your GP as repeat prescriptions. Your clinic letter will explain which kind of prescription is issued for you.
  • Check your clinic letter carefully so you know whether to collect your medicines from the Kingston Hospital branch of Boots or whether your GP can issue your prescription.

Always wait until your clinic letter has arrived.  Our administrative staff cannot give out prescription information, nor can we give out blood results or discuss blood results over the phone.
