What a bed lever is for
This information is for patients who have been assessed as needing a bed lever to improve independence in the home. It is also for the families, carers and professionals supporting you.
A bed lever can help you to:
- turn in bed
- safely get in and out of bed
- sit up in bed.

When not to use a bed lever
Do not use a bed lever if:
- you have not been assessed as needing one
- to stop you from falling out of bed
- you have a hospital-type bed or profiler bed which allows you to raise and lower head and foot sections
- your arm strength is weak or you have limited shoulder movement.
How to fit a bed lever
Please ask someone to help you to fit the bed lever if you have limited mobility or find it hard to bend down and/or move your mattress on and off the bed.
When you first receive the bed lever, check it for damage and check that the pin clips are locked in place.
- First attach the straps with the buckle ends looped around the bottom of the upright lever arm (see Method 1 below). Then attach long end of buckle straps and loop the straps under the bed or to the bed base (see also Method 2 below). Pull tight to make sure the lever is firmly in place.
- Fix the lever under the mattress with the grab handle facing upright, then replace the mattress.
