The Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is a bariatric (weight loss) operation. The gold standard technique used to perform the SG is the laparoscopic (keyhole) approach. In SG approximately 75% of the stomach is removed, and a narrow gastric tube is left, which restricts food intake.

Our Team at Kingston Private Health can offer an initial consultation with a Bariatric Surgeon and a Specialist Dietitian and then, if an operation is indicated, arrange an anaesthetic pre-assessment and a variety of Bariatric procedures, including Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) and an Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG). There are also facilities to perform emergency or expedited procedures such as deflation of gastric band or surgical removal of gastric band.

According to the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), SG typically results in 25% to 35% body weight loss (50 to 70% excess weight loss) from baseline and most of the weight loss occurs in the first 6 months.

Most studies (see the references below) demonstrated that SG is effective for weight loss and may lead to dramatic improvement and even complete remission of many obesity-related co-morbidities, including type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
